Starting Tatcha has led to many wonderful things for me: meeting amazing clients, getting a whole new family in my Tatcha team and recreating timeless rituals that help me, and I hope women everywhere, feel more beautiful. One of the best has been beginning again in my career.
Before Tatcha, I worked in very different careers—from trading credit derivatives to working for a global beauty brand. In those roles, I never felt like I was being my most authentic self; I felt like I was acting out a character in my own life.
One day, I woke up and said aloud, “I choose happiness.” I left the safety of established companies and high-paying jobs, with a great deal of business school debt, a mortgage and no plan. It was the best decision I’ve made in my life.
I began traveling the world, ostensibly seeking a cure for my acute dermatitis. In retrospect, I think I was just searching for something to believe in. I felt jaded about business and knew I needed a fresh start, but I didn’t know where to begin.
It may have seemed like a crazy idea at the time, starting out with no safety net or plan. Looking back, though, I can say with certainty that those days were some of the best I have had. I saw everything as fresh and new again, with a world full of possibility. I stopped defining myself by titles and expectations that other people gave to me. Now that I have a daughter, I see this perspective all the time: her sense of self-worth and how good her day has everything to do with her human experience, not other people’s judgments or expectations.
I am very fortunate that my journey led me here. I always say that I created Tatcha to share the amazing things I’ve discovered on my journeys. Some of these are beauty secrets, some are treasures from Kyoto and some are the beautiful people I have met along the way. Recently, I’ve realized that one of the greatest treasures I have found is the ability to give myself the freedom and permission to begin again—and to choose happiness.
As part of the new year, I would like to share with you some women I have met in my journey who have made the leap to choose happiness. I hope that they can inspire you the way they have inspired me.
