Your wedding day. The monumental occasion a lifetime in the making, the blissful realization that beauty lives as much between us as it does within us.

Understandably, the weeks leading up to your big day are a stressful time. Fortunately, I’ve discovered—first-hand—a few fail safe secrets to ensure your skin glows as you walk down the aisle.

Three months prior to the wedding day, ensure your diet is clean and nutrient-rich. Alcohol and coffee are dehydrating, and salty food causes you to retain water and appear puffy. Begin exercising regularly, as working out is wonderful for skin (and nerves). If you are prone to acne, this is the ideal time to see a dermatologist to be sure there are no systemic issues.

Two months out, begin indulging in a monthly facial. The benefit truly comes from the massage and microcirculation. To avoid potential skin irritation, be aware of which products they are using.

As the month of your wedding arrives, commit to a trusted skincare regimen. Try to get as much sleep as possible, ensuring you relax and recharge. You’ll likely be involved in numerous activities for which you wear makeup (wedding showers, bachelorette parties, etc.). Remember the wisdom of your mother and remove your makeup before bed.

Try to exercise the day of your wedding, if you can fit it in. This will help with stress, flushing the system and granting you a beautiful glow. Your eyes should be sparkling from appropriate amounts of sleep but, if wedding night jitters kept you up the night before, an eye cream will brighten dark circles. Prep your skin with a gentle, nonabrasive exfoliant and slide on a mask to naturally plump the skin. And, of course, be sure to wear waterproof mascara.

If your wedding is a nighttime event, avoid anything with SPF, as it will make you look like a ghost in your photos. Be vigilant about blotting away oil to avoid shine.

Also, don’t forget to give the skin on your body some love as well. Exfoliate, moisturize and, of course, do not tan. Use a bronzer on your face and bathe in black tea for a nutrient-rich hint of color.

Finally—and most importantly—enjoy. It is the first day of forever with the love of your life.
