The Good, The Bad, The Oily—the truth about oils in your skincare

The Good, The Bad, The Oily—the truth about oils in your skincare

Ever since I was a teenager, my skin has been firmly in the “oily” category. While this is a blessing (it wards off wrinkles!), it always made me wary of the oil-based cleansers and leave-on treatment oils I saw lining the shelves.

In creating Tatcha, I worked with our scientist friends to sort out the fact and fiction around using oil on your skin. They taught me that all oils are not considered equal and introduced me to Camellia Oil.

For centuries, geisha have used Camellia Oil from the winter-blooming botanical to melt away makeup, elevate their baths, nourish their skin, and bring their hair and nails to a healthy shine.

When I saw the many uses and benefits, I reconsidered my fear of oils:

Camellia Oil is feather-weight. Each oil has a unique molecular weight and structure, which is why some are heavy and can cause breakouts, while others are naturally non-comedogenic. The molecular weight of Camellia Oil is almost identical to our skin, allowing it to absorb quickly and thoroughly. It feels lightweight and nourishing, not heavy or greasy.

Camellia Oil is packed with anti-aging nourishment.  It is full of vitamins A, B, D and E, as well as Omegas 3, 6 and 9. It is richer in oleic acid than even olive oil, and has more naturally-occurring antioxidants than almost any other botanically-derived oil.

Camellia Oil benefits all skin types, even oily skin. It can feel counterintuitive, but using an oil-based cleanser (as long as it’s a non-comedogenic botanical oil) helps to keep oily skin in balance. Like dissolves like, so it melts away the excess oil produced by skin along with debris and makeup.

This wondrous oil is the foundation of several of our beloved formulas. Here are a few ways to incorporate it into your routine:

Pure One Step Camellia Cleansing Oil: A lightweight blend of Camellia Oil and other botanical oils emulsifies completely to melt away impurities.

Gold Camellia Beauty Oil: A nourishing leave-on treatment to calm and protect skin. 24-karat gold flakes lend a subtle glow.

Camellia Gold Spun Lip Balm: This intensely hydrating lip balm absorbs quickly and smoothly for touchable lips.

Camellia Soap Body Bars in Signature and Exfoliating: Luxurious body bars made of pure, cold-pressed Camellia Oil, lather softly and rinse clean for youthful, silken skin.

Always,
