the difference a day makes

the difference a day makes

It’s hard to believe that it has already been one year since Tatcha’s partnership with Room to Read began. It’s been an amazing journey so far—one that, I am honored to announce, has provided 238,174 days of school for incredible girls around the world. This amazing success is all in thanks to the support and passion of you—our friends and fans.

The students, parents and teachers I met on my trips to Cambodia last year changed my life, and deepened my commitment to the “Beautiful Faces, Beautiful Futures” effort that is now part of Tatcha’s DNA.

As a mother, it means the world to me to know how many girls will know a completely different future because of their education. My own daughter, Alea, is learning to read and becoming a bookworm: she can often be found paging through books, and I love seeing her face light up when she understands the stories. Reading opens up the world to her, an experience that all children should have.

Helping create that moment of understanding for girls around the world is a powerful thing. Surrounded by books and mentors, a girl can truly realize her dreams.

Whenever Alea is asked what she wants to be when she grows up, her answer changes often — a zookeeper one day, a teacher the next. While these dreams are achievable for girls in the United States and other developed countries, they remain out of reach for too many girls around the world.

The impact of giving back has resonated with Alea, too—far more than I could have imagined. Last year, she brought her purple elephant piggy bank to Cambodia to buy books for the students. For her birthday this year, she made a special box for donations in lieu of gifts. I have never been more proud as a mother, seeing that she had found her own way to help empower girls that she had met only months earlier. She inspired me to continue the cycle, caring for one another in whatever small and simple ways we can.

We’re excited to begin our second year of this partnership. Thank you for making the journeys of so many incredible girls more beautiful. Here is to many more days of school in 2015!
