Although I love the coziness of wintertime, the warmer weather of the first days of spring always brings a stir of excitement. Sunshine, fresh breezes and longer days mean it’s time to open the windows and do some spring cleaning. This year, I found myself especially motivated after reading Marie Kondo’s fascinating new book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, the Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing. As I went through closets and drawers, I kept recalling this particularly moving phrase:
“Being surrounded by things that spark joy make you happy... Everyone needs a sanctuary.”
Thinking of my environment (at home, the office and elsewhere) in this way changed everything, especially when it came to the space where I care for my skin. Although I regularly discard cosmetics past their expiration dates, this time I also focused on items that I had not worn or that I had been holding on to just because it was a gift. Evaluating each piece and deciding to keep only the ones I loved most reminded me of the wisdom I learned from the geisha so long ago; that less really is more. Whether paring down belongings or your beauty ritual— keeping only the essentials can help you feel refreshed, inside and out.
When it comes to skincare, I am also firm believer in getting rid of the old to make way for new, baby-soft skin cells every day. Cold wintry weather can dry out skin, as can flu remedies, too little sleep and too much celebrating. Aside from revealing brighter skin beneath the surface, daily exfoliation allows skin to effectively absorb all other treatments. This is true not just for the delicate skin on the face but also the rest of the body using cleansers-exfoliators in the shower to exfoliate dry patches on my elbows, heels and knees leaves me feeling extra soft all over.
Keeping a bottle of water handy helps me increase my water intake throughout the day, which helps keep me hydrated from the inside out — especially important whenever the seasons change.
For a quick skin boost, I love using a Masks and the applying an emollient cream or oil. It’s especially effective after showering, to lock in extra moisture from the steam.
