Balancing the Skin and Soul

Balancing the Skin and Soul

Dear friend,

Because Tatcha believes that beauty starts from the inside out, it makes sense that both the skin and the mind need to be balanced in order to truly glow. To that end, we're delighted to share a few ways that we like to stay balanced, inside and out!

What is balanced skin?

Your skin has something called a natural moisturizing factor, or NMF: a combination of water and sebum (oils created by your body) that helps protect skin and keep it hydrated. As you age, this NMF begins to decline, sometimes allowing the water on the surface of your skin to evaporate and leave skin oily; this means that your skin is constantly competing for water with the air around you. An oily skin surface without the correct balance of water can lead to whiteheads (when sebum hardens to a wax within a pore), blackheads (when that wax becomes oxidized), and pimples (when this all becomes infected and inflamed).

Achieving balance for your skin means making sure that it has the optimal distribution of water and oils to stay hydrated and protected: like yin and yang for your skin. However, this isn’t as simple as it sounds. Imagine your skin as a lock, and skincare like a key. Just like every lock is unique, so is each person’s skin — different factors like environment, diet, and hormones make up the complexities of your own “lock,” and determine which “key” will be the perfect fit. If skin isn’t one-size-fits-all, why should your skincare ritual be?

Finding balance for your skin — and your life

Achieving balanced skin is all about finding the perfect key for your lock. For many people with oily or combination skin, this means hydration that doesn’t introduce even more oil. At Tatcha, we always recommend our unique water-burst moisturizer, The Water Cream, an oil-free formula which deeply hydrates skin without leaving it sticky or greasy.

We recently developed a brand-new formula for rehydrating oily and combination skin types throughout the day: The Satin Skin Mist. This first-of-its-kind powder mist contains no oils, and actually harnesses Okinawa clay to help reduce oil buildup, leaving skin fresh, smooth, and hydrated with a satiny finish.

Balance shouldn’t stop at your skin: infusing moments of Zen throughout your day will help you lead a truly balanced lifestyle. “Your body naturally knows how to balance itself — listen to its voice. Burn incense, listen to music, sway the body, enjoy the flavor of tea, enjoy your breathing, and ask your body how to balance,” says Tatcha’s treasured friend Ito-San, a Japanese monk and master of meditation.

At Tatcha, we aim to bring you a sense of Zen from skin to soul. If you ever have any questions about how to care for your own unique form of beauty, please don’t hesitate to contact our team of experts at any time.

Wishing you balance, today and always,

The Tatcha Team
