What is balanced skin?
Your skin has something called a natural moisturizing factor, or NMF: a combination of water and sebum (oils created by your body) that helps protect skin and keep it hydrated. As you age, this NMF begins to decline, sometimes allowing the water on the surface of your skin to evaporate and leave skin oily; this means that your skin is constantly competing for water with the air around you. An oily skin surface without the correct balance of water can lead to whiteheads (when sebum hardens to a wax within a pore), blackheads (when that wax becomes oxidized), and pimples (when this all becomes infected and inflamed).
Achieving balance for your skin means making sure that it has the optimal distribution of water and oils to stay hydrated and protected: like yin and yang for your skin. However, this isn’t as simple as it sounds. Imagine your skin as a lock, and skincare like a key. Just like every lock is unique, so is each person’s skin — different factors like environment, diet, and hormones make up the complexities of your own “lock,” and determine which “key” will be the perfect fit. If skin isn’t one-size-fits-all, why should your skincare ritual be?
