My love of reading began years ago, when as a little girl I discovered the power pages had to transport me to other worlds – and sparked my love for adventure and seeking new things that continues to this day. Few finds have been as exhilarating as the rare manuscript I found that detailed the geisha rituals that had fascinated me for so long. The practical beauty tips and approach to healthy, happy living inspire me – and the entire TATCHA team – each and every day. Here are some of my other all-time favorite reads:
KyotEAU – Nestled in the back of this enchanting book is a vial of fragrance created by the author, Della Chung, in collaboration with perfumer Christophe Laudamiel. Inspired by temple incense from Kyoto, the book details the scent’s creation and I instantly feel like I’m back in the City of a Thousand Secrets every time I open the cover.
A Different Kind of Luxury – The subtitle of this series of profiles by Bay Area author Andy Couturier really says it all: “Japanese Lessons in Simple Living and Inner Abundance.” Each chapter tells the story of men and women he met while living in Japan, rich with wonderful anecdotes that I savor over and over again.
Bushido: The Way of the Samurai –Tsunetomo Yamamoto, a highly respected samurai from the 18th century, detailed the warriors codes on topics ranging from martial arts to frugality. It’s stunning how applicable many of the tenets remain relevant today, and why it has become required reading for business students worldwide. One of the lines that stays with me most is to “Live being true to the single purpose of the moment.”
The list wouldn’t be complete without a mention of Dr. Seuss’ classic Oh, the Places You’ll Go! I love reading this to my daughter Alea, not just because I loved it when I was a child, but because it’s a reminder that we’re never to old to follow our dreams. Like it says, “Your mountain is waiting, So... get on your way!”
