Every day, we receive an email or query asking us if Tatcha will ever add a sunscreen to the collection. Until today, the answer has been the same for many years: We were hard at work, tinkering with ingredients to create something truly special, unlike any other sunscreen and one worthy of being part of every woman’s daily skincare ritual. It is truly a special day for all of us here at Tatcha to finally be able to introduce this luxurious treasure: Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35.

“Every formulation we make is a labor of love”

Every formulation we make is a labor of love, and much like creating a specialty dish at a five-star restaurant or a hand-sewn evening gown, there is much that goes on behind the scenes before it is introduced. Creating a sunscreen that was effective and elegant without harsh ingredients proved to be a challenge that spanned four years and 100 formula variations before the perfect combination was found.  Inspired by the iconic white makeup of the geisha, which is almost entirely made up of the sun-blocking minerals zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, we knew there had to be a way to use these time-tested ingredients in a modern formula that would be invisible, weightless and give skin the perfectly smooth finish made famous by generations of geisha.

The list of ingredients we didn't want in the formula was the easy part. The real challenge for our R&D team was finding how to make a sunscreen that would benefit the skin as much as it protected it. We wanted something that wouldn't be a chore to apply, something that would be a cherished part of a daily skincare ritual.

To create a luxurious texture, our scientists tinkered with the molecular composition first—most sunscreens are made with water particles suspended in oil, resulting in that all-too-familiar greasy, sticky feeling. Using cutting-edge technology, our team reversed course, suspending the botanical oils in water instead for a smoother, softer feeling upon application. Then came dozens of rounds of formulations to increase the sun protection factor and ensuring broad spectrum protection. This was especially important because sun damage is one of the biggest factors in premature aging. After that was accomplished, we added Japanese Wild Rose extract and other ingredients to reduce the appearance of pores as well as creating a smooth surface so it could double as a primer under cosmetics, or give a finished natural look without makeup.

More than 100 rounds of formulations to increase the sun protection factor and ensuring broad spectrum protection followed. We wanted it to feel luxurious, lightweight, leave no white residue on the skin and maintain its structure in sunlight (many ingredients break down when exposed to UVA/UVB rays). After achieving these goals, we added one more wish to our dream formula: pore tightening. Our team of scientists included Japanese Wild Rose extract, which is clinically proven to boost collagen and reduce sebum in pores, creating a smooth surface that doubles as a primer under cosmetics or a flawlessly natural look on its own.

This is what makes this sunscreen so special—it is so lovely to wear that we actually want to use it every day of the year, not out of obligation but sheer enjoyment. This becomes even more essential as we age and our skin thins, lessening the natural protective barrier (and I personally love products that multi-task as much as I do). The good news is that it’s never too late to start protecting your skin, and as the warm weather wanes and cooler temperatures arrive, it’s just as important to use SPF every day because UVA and UVB rays are still present. I hope you will love this sunscreen as much as we do, and if you’ve tried it, I would love to hear your thoughts. Now the big question for us is what to tackle next! Please let us know what's on your personal wish list in the comments below.

Always,
