Science

Camellia oil, also known as tsubaki oil, is made from the seeds of the camellia flower, first popularized on the Oshima and Kagoshima Islands of Japan. The oil used in beauty treatments is made from extra virgin camellia flower seeds, cold-pressed to retain the full benefits of the essential oil. Camellia oil is rich in oleic acid and Vitamins A, B, D, and E, as well as nourishing Omega 3, 6, and 9. The molecular weight of the oil is an almost identical match for skin, allowing it to absorb quickly and thoroughly.

History

Camellias have a storied legacy in Japan, where the blossoms’ symmetry and longevity have come to symbolize purity, elegance, and love. The native Japanese camellia begins blooming in February, even through the snow, earning the nickname the “rose of winter.” Japan’s geisha have long prized the ingredient. Utilizing the tsubaki oil’s benefits in hair and skincare rituals, the performers massage the oil into hair for a sleek, lacquer shine, and onto the face to melt away thick stage makeup and keep the skin soft, too. The light, flavorless composition of camellia oil is also used for cooking and frying. The oil is a beautifying treat both inside and out.

Provenance

Tatcha’s camellia oil is cold-pressed extracted, which helps to ensure the essential oil retains its full benefits for skin.

Did You Know?

Ama (also known as “sea women”) are Japanese divers famous for harvesting treasures of the ocean, from seafood to pearls. Their traditions, documented for the last 2,000 years, include free diving to depths of 80 feet. To protect their bodies from frigid ocean temperatures, the women were said to have coated their bodies in camellia oil.
