About

Add a touch of luxury to your skincare ritual with gold-infused skincare. Not only are the benefits of gold on skin impressive for its health, but also for its incandescent glow. At Tatcha, some of our earliest and most treasured products prominently feature gold, as we’ve long admired its notable qualities. The beloved Camellia Gold Spun Lip Balm features 23-karat gold encased in healing camellia oil. The balm not only seals in moisture and protects the delicate skin, but the gold also leaves a glamorous sheen. Gold can also be celebrated in the multi-tasking Gold Camellia Beauty Oil, which is formulated with extra virgin Japanese camellia oil and 23-karat gold to lock in moisture, add instant nourishment, and infuse your skincare routine with radiance. There are numerous benefits of gold in skincare, but the precious metal is also ideal when included in a cherished beauty tool. Consider the Akari Gold Massager, which is a gold-leafed facial massager. Not only is it a treasured object, but it also works wonders when used daily to awaken skin, release tension and visibly reduce puffiness, restoring a lifted, youthful look to skin. And purely ornamental, but no less loved is the 22.5-karat gold leaf Obon Tray, which is a glamorous way to display your favorite Tatcha products.

It’s been shown in several studies that gold in skincare can promote firmness and elasticity of skin, as well as help delay the accelerated aging process. Additionally, gold particles have shown promise in accelerating wound healing by increasing blood circulation and providing antiseptic properties.

Science

It’s been shown in several studies that gold in skincare can promote firmness and elasticity of skin, as well as help delay the accelerated aging process. Additionally, gold particles have shown promise in accelerating wound healing by increasing blood circulation and providing antiseptic properties. Aesthetically, high-quality gold will crush on application and impart a subtle gleam to the skin, one that mica and other inexpensive optical agents simply cannot replicate.

History

In Japan, gold leaf has been added to food, gifts, and temples for centuries. It’s considered a sign of hospitality and generosity when given to someone and elevates the every day to the exquisite.

Provenance

Tatcha’s gold comes from a small gold-leafing workshop, renowned for its whisper-thin sheets of gold. The process to create gold leaf is fascinating. It starts with pure gold, which is melted into a liquid. Once liquified, it is poured into a mold and cooled and then miraculously transformed into strips just a few millimeters thick by the strength of specialized machines. The gold is further rolled, making it thin and delicate. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the sheets of gold leaf begin the characteristic phase of beating (with a dedicated machine) in which abaca leaf fiber paper surrounds the gold. The paper allows the gold to thin even further during the hammering process, achieving the delicate beauty and appearance of liquid gold silk.

Did You Know?

The practice of utilizing gold leaf dates back to ancient times. Gold leaf was used as far back as 8,000 years ago in sculptures, paintings, and architecture in Turkey, Egypt, and Phoenicia. In Egypt, gold was the color of the gods and pharaohs, so gold leaf decorated many aspects of the palaces and even the leader’s tombs in pyramids.
