About

The benefits of green tea in skincare go well beyond its impressive antioxidant protection though. Green tea has been known to soothe skin, even for those with sensitivity, as well as help to reduce excess sebum production thanks to the plant’s natural antibacterial properties. The benefits of green tea extract for skin are remarkable: minimizes visible signs of aging, protects and soothes, and reduces sebum.

Science

Green tea is a botanical derived from the leaves and buds of the tea plant Camellia sinensis. This botanical is a rich source of Epigallocatechin Gallate, or EGCG, widely regarded as one of the most powerful antioxidants available. Its polyphenols target free radicals, particularly those caused by UV-induced oxidative damage.

History

Green tea has been used in China and Japan for thousands of years. Originally utilized medicinally, green tea eventually became known for its delicious and refreshing taste, too. Later, formal tea ceremonies, which revolve around the preparation of powdered green tea, became popular, which symbolize harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility. The Uji region was the first area where tea trees were planted in Japan. The small region is known for its unique geography and mild winters, allowing it to be one of the most optimum conditions for tea trees. Green tea’s many benefits are referenced frequently in the ancient beauty manuscript that inspires Tatcha’s skincare collection, whether mixed into a tonic, applied directly to the skin, or steeped in a teapot to enjoy in quietude.

Provenance

TATCHA extracts the complete DNA from green tea grown in the famed Uji province, known for producing some of the world’s finest tea. This antioxidant-rich plant is an integral part of our proprietary Hadasei-3 complex that is composed of a trinity of time-tested ingredients that work in harmony to deliver radiant, healthy-looking skin.

Did You Know?

Green, black, and oolong teas all come from the same plant. Green tea leaves are plucked and immediately cooked to preserve the quality of the plant. This minimal processing method means green tea has a much higher concentration of antioxidants, polyphenols, and chlorophyll compared to other teas.
