Stay cool with an artisan-crafted treasure from Japan

This Kyoto-style fan was handmade exclusively for Tatcha by a master artisan of Miyawaki Baisen-an, a centuries-old fan shop in the heart of Kyoto. Wisteria, with its flowing cascades of purple, the rarest color found in nature, is an auspicious flower in Japan. This distinct botanical is set on a warm golden backdrop to honor our 15th anniversary.

To use, hold the base of the outermost spokes and gently slide open. To close, slowly repeat the motions in reverse.

To store, place the fan base-end first into the fabric sleeve. Handle with care.

Artisan handcrafting a fan.

Handcrafted by

Miyawaki Baisen-an

Since 1823, Kyoto’s Miyawaki Baisen-an has made hand-crafted fans for the imperial family, geisha and other notables. About 20 different processes are involved in making each fan, touched by artisans as many as 80 times before completion. Often tucked inside the obi of the kimono, a fan is an essential part of the geisha’s artistry—used for communication, etiquette and entertainment in dances and games.
