The Cherry Blossom’s Lesson
Admire the Beauty in Every Moment
Now is the time for Hanami, the tradition of viewing cherry blossoms in Japan. Living on the branch for only 2 weeks at most, this bloom’s brief appearance reminds us to appreciate the unrepeatable nature, and beauty, of each passing moment.
The Significance of Cherry Blossoms, Japan’s National Flower
ichi-go ichi-e “one time, one meeting”
This Japanese saying recognizes that every moment is “once in a lifetime,” no matter how small. It reminds us to cherish the present while we’re in it.

The Evolution of Yoshuku to Hanami
It was thought that cherry trees held the spirit of gods, and their blooms signaled a fruitful harvest to come. Farmers picnicked under the trees celebrating their future prosperity, a practice called yoshuku.
予祝 Yoshuku: pre-celebration or to celebrate in advance. The belief that if you celebrate your dreams before they happen, they’re more likely to come true.
OVER TIME,
Gathering under these elusive blooms became less a manifestation, and more a seasonal celebration for family and friends to enjoy food and connection as they appreciate the natural beauty together.
