Skincare Routines for Women of Every Age

Relationships come and go, but the one with your skin will always be sacred. It’s a lifelong commitment that requires patience, love, and experimentation as your complexion changes. It is never too late to start taking care of the future health of your skin. With both reliable skincare and a healthy lifestyle, you can feel confident in your skin at any age. In addition, no matter what skincare ritual you adopt, it is also imperative to include a daily SPF to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Keep reading to discover suggestions for how to put together a skincare ritual for every age.

In Your 20's

When you focus your skincare ritual on illuminating your natural beauty, you are better able to keep your skin bright and fresh at every age. Your ritual at this age should include calming and brightening formulas to protect your skin from the elements and maintain a healthy glow.

Gentle Cleanser

In your twenties, your skin turnover is around every twenty-eight days instead of the intense oily-ness you might remember from your teen years. This means you need a gentle, soothing cleanser, not one filled with harsh ingredients. The Rice Wash is a soft cream cleanser that gently rids skin of impurities to reveal your radiant glow. Without disrupting delicate skin barriers, this cleanser effectively washes away pollutants with its pH-neutral amino acid base. A combination of hyaluronic acid and Okinawa algae leaves skin feeling moisturized and hydrated.

Vitamin C Serum

Vitamin C can help brighten your skin at any age, including in your twenties. Our Violet - C Brightening Serum is oil-free and combines 20% Vitamin C + 10% AHAs to help soften and smooth for more radiant, even-toned skin. AHAs are effective, yet gentle, exfoliants that help brighten skin, making them ideal for use in your twenties and throughout your lifetime.

Daily SPF

Don’t forget sunscreen, even in the colder months of the year. Utilizing products with SPF can protect your delicate skin from the harsh UV rays of the sun. Our lightweight Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen contains broad spectrum SPF 35 and smooths the look of pores, making it suitable for use as a primer.

Nourishing Eye Cream

As you age, the skin around your eyes becomes thinner, so adding extra nourishment will keep the area plump and hydrated. By beginning to use an ultra-nourishing eye cream in your twenties, you will soothe the delicate area surrounding your eyes. The Silk Peony eye cream effortlessly melts into your skin to provide hydration and moisture. Ideal for use before makeup application, it helps reduce the look of fine lines to smooth skin.

In Your 30's

Now is the time to be kind to your skin as you seek nourishing formulas to balance and protect. As you age, cell turnover begins to slow and your skin also experiences a decrease in collagen production. This can lead to the appearance of fine lines, crow’s feet, and hyperpigmentation. While the appearance of your skin is also reliant on environmental factors and your lifestyle, we recommend a skincare ritual in your thirties that focuses on protecting your skin and boosting your natural radiance.

Cleansing Oil

A hydrating 2-in-1 makeup remover and cleanser will be your best friend in your thirties. You’re balancing a busy schedule and crave products that can do it all. The Camellia Cleansing Oil is a beautiful and refreshing start and end to each day, which is why many women in their thirties love this formula. It is blended with camellia oil to nourish the skin, gently melt away oils, and remove waterproof makeup, which leaves the skin feeling softer than silk.

Gentle Exfoliator

At least once a week, adding a gentle exfoliator to your skincare ritual will help you keep a radiant glow throughout your thirties. Clear the buildup in your pores and leave your skin plump and refreshed with The Rice Polish: Gentle. This gentle enzyme powder exfoliates deep into the pores without stripping the skin of essential moisture. The blend of nourishing Japanese rice bran and Japanese wild rose lathers into a creamy foam for a calming experience.

Serum

Applying a serum before your moisturizer can help both products work better, boosting your skin barrier. The Dewy Serum is a 3-in-1 serum of clean, kind-to-skin ingredients that gently resurfaces with lactic acid. Learn more about how The Dewy Serum helps to renew your skin here.

Moisturizer

A beautifully hydrating moisturizer, like The Silk Cream, is an essential part of skincare at every age. This soft weightless gel cream contains hydrating silk and Hadasei-3™, a trio of Japanese superfoods that leave your skin feeling supple and nourished.

Eye Cream

In your 30’s, it’s essential to use a daily eye cream to help keep the thin delicate skin around your eyes plump and firm. Our Luminous Deep Hydration Firming Eye Serum is formulated with a blend of Okinawa red algae, honeysuckle leaf, and caffeine to provide instantly visible firming, reduced puffiness, and a boost of plumping hydration to diminish the look of fine lines.

In Your 40's

As cell turnover slows to around every fifty days in your forties, making minor alterations to your skincare to further honor your skin will keep you looking and feeling your best. It’s essential to exfoliate several times a week and use moisture-rich ingredients like hyaluronic acid to help keep your skin looking and feeling plump and dewy.

Cleanser

Cleansing your skin is not just about skin hygiene, it’s a way to refresh and recharge as you begin and end each day. A gentle cleanser, like The Rice Wash, is a dreamy way to refresh your skin. With a pH-neutral amino acid base, Japanese rice powder, an Okinawa algae blend, and Hyaluronic Acid, you’ll cherish the way your skin feels after using this formula.

Exfoliator

Every few days, we recommend using an exfoliator that can help gently clear your pores, like The Rice Polish: Classic. Treat your skin with this water-activated exfoliant of nourishing Japanese rice bran and silk protein, which transforms into a creamy foam for smooth, polished skin with a healthy glow.

Treatment

To keep moisture locked into your skin, we recommend layering your skincare or finding products that do multiple things at once. For example, our Indigo Overnight Repair cream is a serum-in-a-moisturizer. Use it at night to help bring a fresh, dewy glow to your skin by morning. Learn how it works in tandem with the body’s natural overnight healing here.

Women Over 50

As the skin becomes more mature, it begins to become thinner and lose elasticity. In your 50’s and beyond, we recommend focusing on formulas that add plenty of moisture. You can also take time for a bit of self-care each morning by doing a gentle facial massage, which can help provide lift to your skin. Using a massage tool that can be heated and cooled like our Akari Gold Massager will aid in rejuvenation.

Cleanser

A gentle cleanser each morning and night will keep your skin fresh and radiant. The Camellia Cleansing Oil is a 2-in-1 oil cleanser that will soften, rejuvenate, and seal in moisture. As skin ages, it can lose moisture faster, so this oil cleanser can help boost hydration.

Essence

After cleansing, add an essence to help the rest of the formulas in your skincare ritual bring maximum benefits to your skin. Resurface, soften, and plump with The Essence, which contains Hadasei-3™, a trio of fermented Japanese superfoods, proven to make your skincare ritual more effective.

Hand Cream

Aging gracefully also means caring for your hands, which should be an essential part of your skincare routine. Carrying a luxurious hand cream in your bag when you are on the go will not only help you stay moisturized, but also provide gentle moments of self-care throughout your day. Our Indigo Soothing Hand Cream is a dreamy blend of Japanese Indigo, silk extracts, and squalene that work to soothe and calm irritated skin.

Mask

Before applying moisturizer and eye cream, consider adding a face mask to your routine for even more hydrating and nourishing skincare benefits. Our Luminous Deep Hydration Lifting Mask is a unique, coconut-derived sheet mask that is powerfully hydrating. It can boost the moisture content of your skin by up to 200% in 15 minutes for a plump, luminous complexion.

Deeply Moisturizing Cream

In your 50’s and beyond, it is the perfect time to bring even more hydration to your skin and address fine lines and wrinkles. Our Ageless Enriching Renewal Cream is an intensely rich, hydrating, and moisturizing face cream that helps nourish the skin and address the advanced signs of aging. It is ideal for dry to very dry skin types.

With our nutrient-rich formulas that help balance, nourish and protect the skin, you can begin to embrace beauty at every age. By showing devotion to your skin, you’ll be well on your way to experiencing a healthy, radiant glow that comes from within.

The Best Foaming Facial Cleanser

Foaming cleansers can be effective for all, but the secret to using them correctly is discovering a formula that is ideal for your skin type. A creamy foaming cleanser, which imparts a soft hydration onto the skin as cleansing, is more ideal for dry skin, while a refreshing foaming cleanser that includes oil-balancing ingredients is more ideal for combination and oily skin tones. Some formulas work by allowing the dense bubbles to grasp onto debris, sebum, and makeup, washing away in a single step. While other formulas might need an oil cleanser first to break down these trickier long-lasting ingredients.

The Best Blemish Begone Skincare Products

The Best Blemish Begone Skincare Products

Blemishes can be caused by a variety of things, and are a fact of life. But choosing the right skincare products can help you keep breakouts at arm’s length. Blemishes happen to all of us. But to some of us, they happen more often than not. We call ourselves blemish-prone. And in addition to our usual skincare routines for morning and night, we make active choices about the products we use to make sure blemishes stay away. The word blemish, from the French blessmiss—to make angry—might be the most polite way to refer to many types of skin blemishes like acne, pimples, zits, and all of the other names we ascribe to those skin reactions that cause small unusual bumps. A bit ironique, considering that the word we now associate with acne connotes an imperfection or something else wrong. And while acne can be caused by imbalances in the skin, it’s common enough for all of us not to make it such a big deal. These are not mountains. They’re even much smaller than molehills. Still, those who deal with blemish- or acne-prone skin know that not all skincare products are created for the same skin type. All of us need to choose the right cleanser and moisturizer for our skin, but how we do so is up to us—and, usually, to the specifics of our skin’s behavior. A dermatologist should be your first stop on your skincare journey, but the following guide can help shed a little light on the acne-prone skin type, and some of the common skincare choices (and the optimal acne skincare routine!) made by those who have it. What is blemish-prone skin? Blemish-prone skin is another term for oily skin, which is one of the major skin types. Oily skin is usually categorized by skin that produces more sebum than so-called “normal” skin, but there are a few ways to glean more information about how your skin behaves at baseline. “Oil” is a poetic name for sebum, the waxy substance made of lipids like cholesterol, squalane, and glycerides that is secreted from sebaceous glands that sit within pores and hair follicles. Sebaceous glands are an important mechanism that our skin uses to moisturize and protect itself. Many of our sebaceous glands can be found on our faces and scalps, though there are a few places we don’t have sebaceous glands—like on our lips, or the bottoms of our feet. Sebum is a protective substance that helps to seal moisture by shoring up our skin barrier. In other words, it’s a good thing to have. But those with oily skin can have too much of it, and too much can lead to a higher incidence of breakouts. While oily skin can be a genetic trait, it can also be influenced by the environment around us—the climate, for instance—and our own behaviors—like how we take care of our skin. How do blemishes occur? You’re unlikely to find the term “blemish” in dermatology coursework. Generally, when we’re talking about a blemish, we’re talking about a form of acne, which is described most concisely as a blocked hair follicle. The pores that dot our skin are small channels that house sebaceous glands and hair follicles; they help traffic sebum up and out of skin. When sebum and dead skin clogs a pore, it may become what is called “common acne”, though there are a few types. Blackheads and whiteheads are caused by sebum buildup, and are distinguished by whether or not they’re open (and black) or closed (and white). When an infectious bacteria is introduced, it can cause a more robust infection, resulting in other forms of acne like papules and pustules that are painful to the touch. If you need help identifying what kind of blemish has popped up on you, head to your nearest dermatologist’s office to find out. What are the most important blemish skincare steps? Perhaps the most important thing to do in the face of acne is: Not panic! Breakouts happen to all of us, and usually fix themselves on their own. But if you identify with the oily skin type, and find yourself devoting more time to quelling breakouts than you’d like, you might want to consider some of the skincare products for oily skin, which are popular among those with acne-prone skin. A few common switches include: Cleansing with a gel. Dermatologists at the University of Florida Health once proclaimed that “the most important thing you can do for oily skin is to keep your skin clean.” Those with oily skin may want a cleansing formula with more reach than surface-level face washes—something that can cleanse pores deeply, ensuring they remain clear of acne-causing buildup. Gel cleansers are usually the ones for the job. Water-based gel cleansers are slippery, clear, and tend to foam up. Tatcha’s brand new Matcha Cleanse is a soapless gel that deeply decongests pores— thanks to a unique gel-to-foam texture—to reduce oil, and visibly calm skin without stripping. The Matcha Foam Cleanser takes on oiliness with a gentle touch: balancing the microbiome, soothing, and calming. Exfoliating with acids. There’s a reason that the inventors of alpha hydroxy acids have been honored all over the world. Their contribution to skincare includes one of the most popular exfoliating acids of all time—and it’s a boon for those with oily skin. AHAs, as they’re known, help to “peel” the skin by breaking down the bonds between old and new skin cells. Exfoliation is essential for all skin types, but the ease of AHAs and their efficacy in removing dead skin makes them great for oily skin. They’re commonly recommended to those with oily and acne-prone skin, especially in the form of a daily treatment. A product like the Texture Tonic, which takes the form of a lightweight daily toner, allows you to fit gentle exfoliation into your regular skincare routine—right between cleansing and moisturizing. Its AHAs come from a cornucopia of fruit sources proven to resurface uneven and dull skin—leaving it smooth and radiant. Moisturizing with water Sure, the idea of moisturizing with nothing but water may sound counterintuitive, or downright impossible. And yet it's the animating idea behind the Water Cream, Tatcha’s best-selling moisturizer for oily skin. This lightweight, oil-free cream has a bursting effect when applied, flooding the skin with vital and necessary hydration. It’s also beloved for its powerful superplant ingredients that address traits commonly found in oily skin, like antioxidant-rich wild rose (which has the benefit of smoothing the appearance of large pores) and anti-inflammatory heartleaf extract (a natural azelaic acid alternative). Masking with clay When it comes to natural ingredients that help oily skin, you can’t beat clay. Clay helps absorb excess oil, and is said to also draw impurities out of the skin. Anyone who has used a clay mask can attest to its drying powers, which is why it’s not usually a daily ingredient. Instead, it's suited for more irregular use, like in a face mask. The Clarifying Clay Mask, formulated as a treatment for oily skin, uses marine mineral-rich kucha clay sourced from the islands of Okinawa. For centuries prior, Okinawan women have cherished kucha clay for its superb oil-absorbing properties, using it as a hair powder or face mask. When mixed with volcanic ash and exfoliating Japanese konjac, it makes for smoother, clearer skin in no more than three minutes. 180 seconds per week may not alone calm oily or blemish-prone skin, but good holistic skincare habits will.
