Caring for your Eyes

Caring for your Eyes

Eyes are one of the first things I notice when I meet someone. When I think of the most beautiful women I’ve met, their beauty is reflected in the kindness and joy in their eyes. Regardless of age, expressive eyes are undeniably appealing, but they also need a little extra care because of the delicate skin around them.

I’m often asked about how to care for the skin around the eyes. The most commonly shared issues are dark circles, puffiness and wrinkles. Here’s what I’ve learned about what causes them and what you can do.

BRIGHTEN UP DARK CIRCLES

WHAT’S THE CAUSE?

There are three major causes of dark under-eye circles. The first is poor microcirculation. This causes blood vessels to appear blue, which show through the paper-thin skin around the eyes. Secondly, as skin loses elasticity with age, it creates folds that casts shadows, contributing to the look of dark circles. Finally, hyperpigmentation or dark spots can make the area appear darker.

WHAT TO DO?

Reach for eye treatments that help promote microcirculation so blood vessels look less prominent. The Ageless Revitalizing Eye Cream contains Peony extract, which is known for its ability to energize skin. I like to pair it with the Ageless Akari Gold Massager, which can be used heated or cooled to maximize benefits to the skin.

The Luminous Deep Hydration Firming Eye Serum and Eye Cream both help to smooth the skin so it can reflect light away evenly for a brighter look. The Eye Serum also illuminates the eye area with a fine dust of 23-karat gold that brightens without adding shimmer.

TIGHTEN UP PUFFINESS

WHAT’S THE CAUSE?

Lifestyle plays a big part in the look of puffy eyes. Lack of sleep, overindulgence in salty foods or alcohol, and allergies can cause the skin to hold onto excess water. Over time, collagen production slows down and the tissue around your eye can weaken. This causes the fat cells that normally help support the eyes to move into the lower eyelids, making the eye area look puffy.

WHAT TO DO?

Making healthy lifestyle changes is a good start. I know it’s easier said than done, but try to minimize salt and alcohol intake (moderation is your friend), avoid known allergens (rubbing eyes can lead to more swelling) and get adequate sleep (with head elevated). To get the most restorative rest, try using a silk sleep mask that blocks out disruptive light. Best of all, it helps hold moisture in so I wake up with smoother, more hydrated eyes.

When your eyes do feel puffy, gently massage the area to help move out excess fluid. The Firming Eye Serum has a ceramic tip that creates a cooling effect around the eyes. When developing the Eye Serum, it was very important to me that the tip created a pleasant cooling experience, versus a metal tip that gives a more bracing “shock” of cold. Ceramic is more stable in terms of holding temperature, which makes it ideal for massage. The Eye Serum also contains Japanese Honeysuckle extract, which helps provide an overall tightening effect to the eye area.

PLUMP UP WRINKLES

WHAT’S THE CAUSE?

The skin under the eyes is especially thin and translucent, making it more vulnerable to gravity and environmental stressors. It also lacks oil-producing glands, and without adequate hydration, it is more prone to wrinkles.

WHAT TO DO?

The good news is there are simple and effortless ways to care for your eyes. Treat your eyes to replenishing moisture that helps plump away the look of wrinkles. The Luminous Deep Hydration Revitalizing Eye Mask is made from the water of a coconut and triples the moisture content of your skin. The unique gel-like fibers of the mask adhere more closely than a paper sheet mask so the silky serum can be better absorbed by the skin. After 15 minutes, remove the mask and seal in the nutrient-rich hydration with the Eye Cream. The combination has worked wonders for me even after a long flight or sleepless night.

A lot of people feel self-conscious about their eyes, but smile lines are the signs of a joyful life. My wish is for you to look back on happy times and look forward to new experiences. What is a joyful memory that makes you smile?
